Bill Howard is a photographer and toymaker living in Santa Barbara, California.

He was raised in New Jersey, where he started taking photographs when he was fifteen with his dad’s old Rollieflex. Soon after, he bought a 35 mm Pentax SLR and converted a closet into a darkroom. He became a photojournalist for his high school’s newspaper and began contributing photos to the literary magazine. At sixteen, he had his first photography show at Swain’s Art Gallery in Morristown, New Jersey.

After receiving a BA in history and art history from the University of Pennsylvania, he moved to the remote Bahamian island of Andros and started shooting underwater. After two years on Andros, he moved to New York City to work in advertising and stopped taking photos for 35 years. He doesn’t know why he stopped, and he can’t imagine ever stopping again.

Since returning to photography, he has exhibited his work in several group shows around Santa Barbara. His first solo show will be held at OlioSuTavola Gallery in Lucca, Italy, in September of 2019.
